ISO Accreditation Awarded to PNCM-BIOTECH

The Philippine National Collection of Microorganisms (PNCM) of BIOTECH, UPLB was formally awarded the ISO/IEC 17025:2005 last January 28, 2015. This is the first accreditation and only one so far on biological testing in the UP System.

The ISO/IEC 17025:2005 specifies the general requirements for the competence to carry out tests and/or calibrations, including sampling. It covers testing and calibration performed using standard methods, non-standard methods, and laboratory-developed methods.

Dr. Rosario G. Monsalud, PNCM Laboratory Technical Manager and Head Curator, said that it has been the dream of PNCM to be ISO accredited as early as 10 years ago. Due to extensive preparations needed, it was only in 2014 that she deemed that the lab was ready for accreditation. According to Dr. Monsalud, PNCM was awarded 18 scopes of accreditation particularly on identification of microbial cultures (bacteria and fungi), and various microbiological analyses on food and beverages, water, packaging material and efficacy of biocides.

Dr. Reynaldo V. Ebora, BIOTECH Director expressed that the accreditation would not have been possible without the hard work of the PNCM staff and the able leadership of Dr. Monsalud. He also acknowledged grants from DOST, the collaboration of the private sector especially Procter and Gamble Philippines and support from the UPLB Administration. Dir. Ernani M. Dionisio, PAB-DTI OIC lauded the PNCM and stated the importance of an international accreditation in the light of ASEAN integration this year. He encouraged everyone to look at other ISO accreditations and what services can be maximized for the rich pool of experts in UP. Vice Chancellor Rex B. Demafelis hopes that the ISO accreditations at BIOTECH would inspire other UPLB units to aspire for similar endeavors. Chancellor Fernando C. Sanchez, Jr. said that the accreditation of PNCM marks another milestone in UPLB’s direction to become a globally competitive University. The Chancellor further said that the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension (OVCRE) will coordinate with BIOTECH for a new PNCM wing which was highly applauded by the staff.

PNCM is the second laboratory at BIOTECH to have been given this accreditation. The Central Analytical Services Laboratory (CASL), a service laboratory providing chemical analysis, was given the accreditation last September 1, 2014.
