Dr.Aggangan named as 2016 Gawad Saka Outstanding Agri Scientist

Dr. Nelly S. Aggangan of UPLB-BIOTECH was awarded as the Gawad Saka Outstanding Agricultural Scientist for 2016 (National and Regional Level) on 12 December in awarding rites held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.  She  was cited for her exemplary work as a researcher and scientist in the areas of agriculture and forestry, notably on her contributions to Mycorhizza Technology, Bioremediation, Forest Restoration and Plant Nutrition.

The Gawad Saka Award, which is hosted by the Department of Agriculture, is an annual search for outstanding achievers in the field of agriculture and fisheries. The annual search is aimed at honoring the invaluable contribution of the agricultural sector in the country’s economic performance, including farmers, fisherfolk, livestock raisers, farmers’ organizations, agri-entrepreneurs, and scientists.

Dr. Aggangan is a seasoned and well-regarded researcher who has been with working and contributing in BIOTECH for over three decades now. A Scientist 1 under the Science Career Service of the Department of Science and Technology, she holds a PhD degree in Forest Biotechnology from Murdoch University, Perth, Western Australia and earned MS and BS degrees in Forestry from UPLB. She also had a two year Postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Institute of Forest Sciences (NIFoS, formerly Korea Forest Research Institute) in Suwon, South Korea where she developed protocol on mycorrhizal inoculation of somatic embryogenesis derived microplants.

Dr.Aggangan was also instrumental in the improvement and commercializtion of “Mykovam,” a soil-based biological fertilizer, as a commercial product efficient in replacing expensive chemical fertilizers for the survival and growth of both agricultural and forest crops. Mykovam is regarded as one of UPLB-BIOTECH's commercially successful products. (MJC de Roma)
