ACTICon™ wins Outstanding Creative Research 1st prize at RICE Exhibit

UPLB-BIOTECH’s Irene A. Papa and Fe O. Zulaybar, won the Outstanding Creative Research (Likha Award) 1st Prize at the 2017 Regional Invention, Contests and Exhibits (RICE) for their research “Development and Utilization of Actinomycetes as Biocontrol Agents against Panama Wilt Causing-Fusarium oxysporum TR4 in Cavendish Banana.” The award was given on October 13, 2017 at the Robinsons Place Dasmariñas in Cavite. The RICE was organized by the Department of Science and Technology-CALABARZON.

A biopesticide product, ACTICon™ is effective in controlling Fusarium wilt or Panama disease. This deadly disease is caused by the fungal pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f.sp cubense (Foc), which typically attack Cavendish bananas.

Tropical race 4 (TR4), on the other hand, is the name given to the strains of this fungus. Like all other soil-dwelling Foc strains, TR4 cannot be controlled using fungicides and cannot be eradicated from soil using fumigants, according to scientific reports.

Papa and Zulaybar were among the selected inventors in CALABARZON who put their inventions to public display in the RICE Exhibit from September 11 to 13. From the original 65 entries submitted to DOST- CALABARZON, 34 entries qualified during the preliminary screening of entries last August 24. These entries covered research topics under Invention, Utility Model, Industrial Design, and Creative Research. Qualified researches and inventions were showcased in the exhibits. Winners of the regional title will vie for the National Invention, Contests and Exhibits (NICE) in 2018.

RICE is a biennial celebration of the country’s premiere S&T institution, DOST, that provides an outlet for local inventors to feature their works and to recognize the indispensability of Filipino inventors in the Philippine society and in the landscape of national economic development.
