Field trial of 'BT talong' defended

by Dennis Carcamo (Philippine Star, May 15, 2012)

MANILA, Philippines - Various government agencies pressing for the continuous field trials of genetically modified talong (eggplant) on Tuesday maintained that these trials are being undertaken "responsibly and safely."

"The current field trials are being responsibly and safely undertaken together with scientific organizations and partner state universities in compliance with the biosafety requirements and guidelines approved by national regulatory bodies such as the National Committee on Biosafety of the Philippines and the Bureau of Plant Industry of the Department of Agriculture," said Dr. Rex Victor Cruz, UP Los Banos Chancellor.

Cruz was reacting on the Writ of Kalikasan and writ of continuing mandamus issued by the Supreme Court, temporarily stopping the field trials of genetically-modified organism, particularly of BT talong in the country.

International environmental group Greenpeace asked the SC to stop the field trials of the BT talong which allegedly have been done hapzardly.

In a press briefing in Pasay City, Cruz, a renowned environmental scientist, also said there is no reason to stop the field testing of the crop at this time.

"There is absolutely no compelling reason to stop or delay the trials, especially at this time when the University is close to achieving gains from substantial public investment in this project," Cruz said.

He said UPLB has sued members of Greenpeace who last February forcibly entered the contained area where the field trials of BT eggplant and uprooted and destroyed the specimen.

"The University pursued this course of action to protect and safeguard the integrity of UPLB as a center of excellence and uphold its academic freedom and hold the perpetrators liable for their actions," Cruz said.
