Science Projects of Agusan Sur National High School Conducted at BIOTECH Win Awards

AgusanpicA ‘partnership’ of the Antibiotics Laboratory of BIOTECH-UPLB and the Agusan Sur National High School has been prts that its studeoducing winning science projects. Already, the school has garnered 24 awards from the eight investigatory projecnts have conducted at the Biotech laboratory.

According to BIOTECH’s director, Rey Ebora, these awards were won from various science research competitions from the Division Level, Regional Congress, IntelDepEd National Science Fair, and even international competitions.

From the mentoring of BIOTECH researchers, Ms. Teofila O. Zulaybar and Ms. Irene A. Papa and laboratory technician Mr. Bernardo Mercado, the students develop quality science investigatory projects worthy to be presented even in international scientific conventions.

One of the projects conducted at BIOTECH entitled ‘Antagonistic Activity of Marine Bacillus Species Isolated from Mangrove Soil Against the Opportunistic Ice-Ice Disease Causing Bacteria: Science Projects of Agusan Sur National High School Conducted at BIOTECH Win Awards Implication on Red Algae (Kappaphycus alvarezil) Production won first place in the National Science Quest sponsored by the Association of Science Educators of the Philippines (ASEP). It became champion of the National Youth Science, Technology, and Environment Summer Camp Research Congress. It also won the gold medal in the Asian Young Inventors’ Exhibition held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in May 2012. Further, this project was presented in the International Union of Microbial Societies 2011 Congress held in Sapporo, Japan and in the International Science Fair 2012 held in Manitoba, Canada.

Another notable project is the Marine Actinomycetes from Mangrove Soil in Lianga Bay, Philippines: Potential Source of Antibiotic against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This study won first place both in the division and regional levels, second place in the national level, and a gold medal, also in the Asian Young Inventors’ Exhibition held in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia in May 2012.

The Agusan Sur National High School has been conducting its science projects at the Antibiotics Laboratory since 2006. The laboratory, which is under the Bioinformatics and Drug Discovery Program, is one of the laboratories of BIOTECH that serves as a venue for the science projects of many secondary schools in the country.  BIOTECH has actually been assisting secondary level students since the mid-1980s to promote science, particularly biotechnology, among the youth.

The dedicated staff of the Antibiotics Laboratory serve as mentors to the young aspiring scientists by nurturing their critical thinking and by enhancing their knowledge on the rudiments of science. They inspire and motivate young students to pursue science as a career.

Some of the schools that have worked with BIOTECH include the UP Rural High School, Christian School International, Cavite National Science High School, Pitogo High School, Tibagan High School, and the award-winning Agusan National High School. (RADorado)
