DOST Opens UPLB Biotechnology Plant

MANILA, Philippines --- The  Biotech Pilot Plant  for the  Philippines' involvement in biotechnology (biotech) research for new products, was inaugurated Thursday at the University of the Philippines in Los Baños (UPLB), Laguna.

The plant has a Fermentation Engineering Service Laboratory (FESL), with its building and old equipment rehabilitated at a cost of P25 million, about a half of the P58 million budget for research and development (R&D) fund of the  Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD).


There are also new ones, bought at a cost of some P9 million, two of them centrifugal and centrifuge equipment.

However, the new equipment are still with the Bureau of Customs (BOC) because of documentation requirements, FESL program leader Prof. Dr. Fidel Rey Nayve said.


Dr. Amelia P. Guevara,  Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undersecretary for R&D, led the inauguration, along with Dr. William G. Padolina, president of the National Academy of Science and Technology (DOST-NAST), Dr. Reynaldo V. Ebora, Biotech-UPLB director, among others.
