Gotu-kola

A magnificent herbal plant dabbed as the source for the “Fountain of Youth.” This herb has an interesting history for ages and it has a known pronounced effect on the health of the skin. The extract of Centella asiatica is wonderful when used to boost circulation, improve the collagen foundation of the skin, and fight oxidation – thereby making it a superb ingredient for anti-aging skin care products like soaps to improve skin firmness and elasticity. The extract of Gotu kola is also of great help when used on treating stretch marks as well as in treating post-operation and trauma scars, as it promotes healing, yet helps to prevent the formation of excess scar tissue. It prevents formation of bedsores. In Ayurvedic practice, it has a valuable and sought-after Vayasthapana effect – helping to retard the aging process. The asiaticosides and triterpenes extracted from the plant have modulating properties on the development and metabolism of connective tissue, improve the synthesis of collagen and other tissue proteins by modulating the action of fibroblasts in the vein wall, and stimulate collagen remodeling in and around the venous wall. The triterpenoids found in Gotu kola extract are thought to stimulate the production of collagen 1 and assist with wound healing. They therefore improve wound repair, with a better re-epithialisation and a normalization of perivascular connective tissue, thus, allowing an improvement of the venous wall tone and elasticity. Apart from those mentioned above, Gotu kola extract is also known to have anti-psoriatic and anti-eczema properties. The saponins in Gotu kola also help prevent excessive scar formation, by modulating and slowing down the excessive production of collagen (the material that makes up connective tissue), at the wound site and also increases the concentration of antioxidants in wounds. Various studies have supported the actions of centella and furthermore have been shown to be effective in treating surgical wounds, skin grafts, gangrene, traumatic injuries, burns, chronic skin lesions, ulcers and even leprosy wounds. Gotu kola in addition is known to be effective in promoting vitality, slimming, strengthening of veins (varicose veins), anti-stress, anti-anxiety, and as aphrodisiac. Because it contains a high concentration of thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2) and pyridoxine (vitamin B6). Gotu kola also promotes hair and nail growth.
